The school of Sadyba passed the Olympic flame!

On April 6th, and to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, our preschool and primary school pupils took part in the “Relay around the World” that originates from the label “Terre de Jeux 2024”. Accompanied by the French ambassador to Poland, Frédéric Billet, they had the chance to take part in a variety of sports activities, and to meet two former Olympic champions: Robert Korzeniowski (race walking) and Katarzyna Woźniak (speed skating).

This initiative, started by Paris 2024 with its “Terre de Jeux 2024” label to mark the hosting in 2024 of the next Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, is intended to promote the values of sport and to send a message of peace and fraternity to the world.

The 24-hour sports relay spanned all continents and all time zones. Throughout the day, each embassy and overseas departments and territories that have been awarded the “Terre de Jeux 2024” label took part in a one-hour sports event starting at 9:00 a.m. local time.

In the case of Poland, the French Embassy joined forces with the French School in Warsaw, as sport is a core component of the pupils’ school curriculum. For one hour, the children participated in different sports activities depending on their level:

  • Motor skills exercise and creation of the Olympic rings with the help of objects for the preschool pupils;
  • Throwing activities for the CE1 classes;
  • Relay race with the Olympic flame for the CE2 classes;
  • Badminton and Ping-Pong for CM2 classes.

Following the workshops, the school handed over the online relay baton to the embassies in the next time zone. The students of CM2 class then gathered in the gymnasium for the “white card” operation, and each held up a white card as a symbol of peace.

This event culminated for the CE2 and CM2 pupils with a discussion in class with Katarzyna Woźniak during which the children were able to ask all their questions related to her background, both professional and personal, to the practice of skating, to her experience at the Olympic Games, or even to her future projects. During the encounter, they even had the opportunity to see and touch two real Olympic medals!

Congratulations to our young athletes for their beautiful message of peace, and thank you to the Olympic athletes and the ambassador for being with us!
