Some history

The Palmes académiques were instituted by Napoleon I in 1808 to honor members of the University and high schools. At the time, they were honorary titles attached to a function and were embroidered on the left shoulder of the regulatory costume. Napoleon III made the Palmes académiques an official decoration that could be attached to the insignia of other orders and extended the attribution to non-teachers who did not belong to the academic world but who had rendered eminent services to French education.

The Palmes académiques may be awarded to foreigners and French citizens residing abroad who actively contribute to the expansion of French culture in the world.
